Whether
we have small or big goals, meeting them can change our entire lives, so for us
to actualize them, we need to set them properly. Anything not done properly
from the beginning always end up in a mess or takes a lot of effort to correct.
We
have to know why we are setting goals, the main reason we set goals is to
become a better person in life, it is always towards positivity, to get the
pleasure that goes with achievement.
For
2015, we need to sit down alone, think deep on what we really want and pray
fervently about them. The reason for being alone when trying to make these kinds
of decisions is because, for some of us, the decisions we make that will guide
us to set our goals and achieve them can change our lives forever. Life is per
head and sometimes we need to carve out that moment with ourselves alone and
consult our creator. So what are those critical things we must change, we must
practice, we must start, we must conclude, we must give out, we must take for
ourselves, those friends we must make now and the ones we must remove from our
clique. That passion we have to launch, nurture to ensure it doesn’t die.
Make
it plain upon the table. This is very important, except we just want to deceive
ourselves though it doesn’t apply to everyone; some people are super
intelligent and focused or let’s just say they are genius, so they can create a
list in their heads that can stick for as long as they want it. The truth is
writing down our goals makes it a lot easier for us to be serious about them,
the same way our daily (to do list) is a tool to achieve daily activities, same
way our yearly goals needs to be put down in writing. It should be like an
examination timetable, what we plan to do and when it has to be done. We also
have to put down the strategy we want to adopt, the challenges we can foresee
already, how we plan to tackle these challenges, the tools we need to tackle these challenges. Where we
write all these is also important, we have to make sure, it is a safe place,
not some kind of piece of paper or an ordinary jotter that we just fling away.
We have to use a proper diary or book; it can also be in soft copy but must be
protected.
We
shouldn’t also forget to plan, how we intend to relax, relaxation helps us to
reduce tension, there are things that we do that puts us at ease, also make
them plain upon the table, they make achievements easier.
Cut
the goals into pieces, set them out taking into consideration timing, scale of
preference, size and create a step by step guide. We should state how exactly we want these goals
we have set to happen, the practical guide, that says “for me to be able to do this at the end of 2015, on the 1st
of January, I must have done this” so the daily activities that leads to
the weekly, monthly achievements that will eventually lead to the end of year
achievement should be broken down. This will make it easy for us to actualize
our goals. We can also come back to this guide regularly to be sure that we are
on track. This guide also makes us to be exact and it helps us to avoid being
confused. It’s our process manual.
After
writing down what we intend to achieve, the next thing is to seek advice, make
enquiries on how exactly we are going to achieve these goals, the ones we can
do by ourselves, we have to separate them from the ones we need real help from
other people to achieve them. Most times things we can easily do are not real
goals because they are not very challenging, most goals need an extra hand (help)
and guidance for them to be actualized. We should be realistic, we shouldn’t deceive
ourselves, so we should search, stick to habits, get materials and people that
can help us achieve these goals.
Now
that we have our proper guide, it is like a movie script, pick it up and take
the first action. This is where we really know if we are serious or not. Imagination,
writing, setting the time table, stating the strategies, stating the challenges
and how we hope to tackle the challenges are useless, if we are not going to do
anything about it. Talk is very cheap; it is action that is the main ingredient
to achieve anything. This is very important because this is where the
challenges really surface but thank God we have envisaged them ahead and
experiencing them now is not a surprise. For
instance, if my goal is that by the end of the year, I should have saved a
particular amount of money, I would have stated what my daily, weekly, monthly,
quarterly and biannual contribution will be for me to stand tall on the 31st
of December, 2015 and say yes, I achieved my goal but I also wrote down the
challenges of my indiscipline when it comes to spending, unforeseen
contingencies like armed robbery, health issues and so on, how I’m going to
discipline myself to limit my spending and stick to my contributions, how I’m
going to be more careful to avoid theft by going cashless and being conscious
of fraudulent people, how I should try as much as possible to eat right, engage
in healthy exercises to stay healthy and so on. Now I started my contribution by giving a
standing order to credit a particular savings scheme, I’m excited but as time
went on maybe a health issue came up or something affected my source of income,
I had envisaged these challenges before, yes, it’s very difficult right now
experiencing it but I bring out the other sword I kept aside for this new
situation, I had written down, that in case this happens, this is what I will
do, so it’s time for another action to tackle the new unpleasant situation, so
I probably saved in different schemes to hedge against some of these unforeseen
circumstances.
Truth
be told, if unforeseen circumstances come up, we may not really be able to
achieve our goals as stated in exact terms but we all know, it is because
whatever caused it is beyond human control and we should not be devastated that
we did not achieve our goals. This is why we cannot do without our maker; He is
the only one that can make us actualize every dream we have. But we shouldn’t
be lazy, encourage indiscipline, just sit down and look, when others are
running and expect to achieve things, especially great things.
And
finally, when we arrive, let’s be very thankful to God that made it possible
for us to achieve our goals, let’s cultivate the habit of sharing with others
how we were able to achieve these things, it will help others correct their
mistakes, let’s appreciate those that contributed to the success, no man is an
Island and then let’s jubilate and pop champagne.
The race has started, time waits for no one,
whether we like it or not, the clock is ticking. Let’s run and keep running
till we arrive at our destination, we pray that God will keep us alive, healthy
and provide all we need to achieve our goals and make Him proud of us. Let’s
also promise Him that we will not fail Him.
Once
again, Happy New Year (2015). Wishing you a fulfilled 2015.
